kenya tours and travel

Kenya tours and travel industry is definitely one of the top performing sectors in the country’s economy. This has however been threatened by the recent terror threat by the Al Shabaab militants. There continues to be heightened security in the country further to the update on security that was issued on 24th October. The deployment of Kenya’s armed forces in Somalia and along the Somalia border has stabilized the situation on security along the borders and contained the threat coming from Al Shabaab guerrillas within Somalia.

This intervention on security has however provoked threats of retaliation from the guerrillas and there have since been two grenades assails in downtown Nairobi. Security has been increased within and outside Nairobi as the government is taking these threats very seriously as it can greatly affect Kenya’s tours and travel industry.

The Kenya Tourism Federation has issued their advice like so:-

1.Both grenade occurrences took place in areas of Nairobi that are NOT visited by international tourists. The first took place in a local bar after midnight while the second transpired at a crowded bus stop at 7:30 pm aiming at local commuters.

2.The tourism industry has acknowledged that specific areas within Nairobi have been identified by the government and considered to have a higher element of risk. As a result, all industry members have been advised to either avoid the named locations or to be extra vigilant while in the surrounding area.

3.All the urban areas now have enhanced security surveillance with particular emphasis on the areas patronized by international visitors. These include hotels, tourist facilities, restaurants and shopping malls.

4.The Tourism industry, and other existing recommendations, will not run any safaris within 150 km of the Somali border. It should be noted that all of Kenya’s wildlife Parks and Reserves are located well away from this exclusion zone.

5.The Kenya Coast, especially Lamu and its environs have continuously enjoyed higher levels of security and surveillance in the wake of the latest kidnappings. The Tourism Minister visited Lamu along with top government and tourism industry officials and the US Ambassador to Kenya (Maj. (Rtd) Scott Gration). They verified that the security situation is greatly increased with higher visitor inflows being experienced. The US Ambassador said that the US Government was contended with the heightened measures of security taken by the Kenyan authorities to prevent any terror attacks.

6.The Kenya Tourism Federation Safety and Communication Center continues to supervise the situation on a 24-Hour basis and issue updated advice to the Tourism Industry. Please consult your Tour Operator in respect of specific areas to avoid while in Nairobi and Mombasa. There are many tourists presently in the country who continue to enjoy their safari and beach holidays as intended. We wish to reassure the visitors intending to visit Kenya that they will enjoy the warm and friendly welcome for which Kenya is prominent.
